1995’s Ocean Beach was a return to form after the somwhat less than perfect self titled (“Bridge”) LP that preceded it. While that LP had a few amazing songs, it was essentially a collection of leftovers from the masterpiece (“rollercoaster”) released earlier the same year (1993). Ocean Beach finds them refreshed and forward-leaning. Originally a double 10”, here it is reissued as three sides of a double LP, with the fourth side adding 1994’s Shock Me EP. The title track, a Kiss cover, is the first example of Kozelek’s predilection for turning classic rock bangers into introspctive mopers that sit neatly alongside his own compositions. Overlooked and recommended.
